Groups of organs, muscles, blood vessels, and nerves in our body are organized into compartments. These compartments are separated by connective tissue called fascia. If an injury is sustained, the compartment could fill with blood and swelling. Fascia does not expand, so if the compartment fills it can create pressure in the compartment. This is called Compartment Syndrome; the pressure build up can lead too a loss of blood flow to the area and tissue death. Compartment Syndrome is most common in the forearms and lower legs, but can be present in the hands, feet, upper arms, thighs, and buttocks as well.
Summary of condition
Compartment Syndrome symptoms can include:
- Pale skin (decrease in colour)
- Swelling of affected area
- Tightness of affected muscle
- Constant pain
- Numbness in affected area
- Inability to move limbs associated with affected area
Conventional Treatments
In most cases, Compartment syndrome is first treated with surgery (Fasciotomy) to cut open the fascia of the affected area alleviating the pressure. The incision is then repaired typically with a skin graft.
In extreme cases when there is an occurrence of total tissue death in the compartment, amputation is the only form of treatment.

HBOT treatments for Compartment Syndrome are most effective before a Fasciotomy is performed. HBOT can aid in reducing the swelling in the compartment and the complications that come with Compartment Syndrome (tissue death, pain, skin colour). The goal of HBOT treatments for compartment syndrome is to reduce the swelling and pressure enough to avoid surgical procedures.
