As with other holistic forms of treatments, there is much misinformation about hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) online. Some people are misled by this information and feel let down, upset, and even angry treatments were not effective for treating a specific type of illness or disease, which they were lead to believe would help.
Unfortunately, there are places out there that will feed the public certain claims and other false details about the benefits of HBOT, such as being a holistic cure for cancer, which is not the case whatsoever. Some of the other more common illnesses and disease that these so-called sites promote HBOT for and misinform people that they could be cured includes:
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Spinal Cord Injuries
- Heart Attack
- Cerebral Palsy
- Heart Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
To be clear, the FDA has not established the effectiveness of HBOT for these and other disease and illnesses. While some people can benefit from HBOT and it can help if these have certain types of these ailments, it does not necessarily mean or imply it will be an effective form of treatment for everyone.
The FDA has approved HBOT to be effective for fourteen specific reasons and causes, as follows
- Intracranial Abscesses
- Decompression (Diver’s) Sickness
- Gas or Air Embolisms
- Thermal Burns
- Necrotizing Soft Tissue (Subcutaneous, Fascia, Muscle) Infections
- Compromised Skin Flaps/Grafts
- Other Acute Traumatic Ischemias (Compartment Syndrome, Crush Injuries)
- Bony Necrosis or Soft Tissue Delayed Radiation Injuries
- Enhanced Healing for Select Types of Wounds (Arterial Ulcers, Venous Ulcers, Diabetic Wounds)
- Refractory Osteomyelitis
- ISSHL (Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss)
- Cyanide or Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
- Gas Gangrene Myonecrosis and Clostridial Myositis
- Exceptional Blood Loss
Please keep in mind, as previously mentioned, HBOT for other types of illnesses and disease has not been proven effective by the FDA. However, this is not to say that in certain cases, depending upon the medical condition, age, and overall health of a patient, that HBOT could possible help alleviate and reduce the effects of the disease or illness, but should not be viewed or considered a cure.
To illustrate, you are involved in a serious car accident and sustain numerous injuries to your body. When tissues are injured in this manner they require time to heal while relying upon the amount of oxygen in your blood stream to promote healing processes. With HBOT, the amount of oxygen in your blood stream is increased 3 to 4 times, causing improved oxygen delivery to injured cells and tissues and reducing overall recovery time.
